Organic vs Natural Skincare

Which one is more healthier for you?

The answer is neither.

Natural does not always means preservatives and chemical-free. Botanicals used in natural cosmetic can be heavily contaminated with bacteria, toxic pesticides and fertilizers. That’s why it’s important to demand for organic or biodynamic ingredients.

Organic does not means a particular product is free from toxic and hazardous chemicals. This is because the manufacturer may add chemicals, synthetic ingredients or harmful additives when formulating the product. Have you ever noticed cosmetic labels that say 75% or 50% organic? Then, the other 30-50% is made up of chemicals cocktail.

This is where reading labels and gaining some general knowledge on cosmetic ingredients comes handy. After all,  you did your homework well when it comes to food. So why not do the same on the stuff you regularly feed your skin?

It’s about time consumers stop putting their health in manufacturers hands.

Read Labels, Know Your Ingredients Well.

In Love With The Vanilla Queen

La Patricia Rain is one lady with a truly interesting personality and an equally interesting job. She is the Vanilla Queen…this is no joke, she is the reigning Vanilla Queen.

I’m a fan of Ms. Rain. I’m a loyal follower of her blog at patriciarain.blogspot.com and really enjoy the stories, recipes and culinary tips in The Vanilla Cookbook.  Her virtual queendom is www.vanilla.com that specializes in vanilla beans and vanilla products. I’ve tried her mexican vanilla beans and really like them.

Anyway, read her interesting story on how she was adopted by the Mexican Totonacapans (who descended from the original cultivators of vanilla beans) and gets to be the Vanilla Queen here.

Pre-Polluted Babies, Anyone?

Every day, consumers rely on household products that contain thousands of chemicals. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) , a strong environmental advocacy NGO group in the US made up of experts and scientists from various  background:

…The human race is now polluted with hundreds of industrial chemicals with little or no understanding of the consequences. Babies are born pre-polluted with as many as 300 industrial chemicals in their bodies when they enter the world. Testing by Environmental Working Group  has identified 455 chemicals in people, and again, no one has any idea if these exposures are safe.

We are at a tipping point, where the pollution in people is increasingly associated with a range of serious diseases and conditions from childhood cancer, to autism, ADHD, learning deficits, infertility, and birth defects. Yet even as our knowledge about the link between chemical exposure and human disease grows, the government has almost no authority to protect people from even the most hazardous chemicals on the market.

Common sense would tell us that baby and children products should not contain toxic ingredients. However, some well-known baby products do contain hidden carcinogenic contaminants 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. Both 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde are known carcinogens and formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes. For more information on this please read the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics Report on Toxic Chemicals Found in Kids Bath Products.

The usual argument would be “the usual small doses of exposure to these chemicals is insignifiant”. However, think about this…we are all directly exposed to chemicals in personal care and household products daily. Add these up to the exposures to other toxics in food we eat, water we drink, air we breathe and so forth. All of these exposures added up could lead to diseases later in life.

There are alternatives to these toxic ingredients. By eliminating unnecessary toxic chemicals and pesticides, growth hormones, genetically engineered drugs and animal-feeds, synthetic additives, colors and synthetic preservatives from ourdaily household products, cosmetic, food production and preparation our body will function and breathe so much better and the environment will become much more greener and safer to live in.

As consumers, we have the POWER to make a difference. As producers and manufacturers, we can make a BIG difference. Think about it.

100% Pure Organic Liquid Olive Castile Soap

Last year, I scoured pharmacies and supermarkets in KL searching for pure, original liquid castile soap made of 100% olive oil. Unable to find one, I turned to the Internet and found plenty of online stores offering castile soap but most do not ship to Malaysia or the shipping would cost the earth or the soap was not made entirely of olive oil. Then, I stumbled upon A Little Ol’ Factory, a small online store specializing in artisan aromatic products and eco-friendly beauty ingredients. They also  sell handmade certified organic 100% olive liquid castile soap. It was on sale and I bought four 16oz bottles of them all unscented.

This castile soap is as pure as a liquid soap can get. It is handcrafted from distilled water, KOH, saponified Olive Oil and nothing else added.  The soap smells faintly of extra virgin olive oil.

Castile soap is so mild that even newborn babies and those with ultra-sensitive skin can use it. This is just perfect for my two daughters who both have eczema. Since using the soap and being totally ‘detergent-free’ my daughters’ eczema, especially  Nuha the eldest one,  has been improving steadily. They  still have occasional outbreaks, but it wasn’t as stubborn as it was before.

A true Castile Soap should be ‘100% olive oil’ and NOT ‘mostly olive oil.’ Liquid castile soap have varieties of use. This soap will not produce a lot of sudsy lather but will effectively and gently clean hair, skin, laundry, dishes – almost anything you can think of. Mix it with some water in a spray-bottle and you’ll get yourself a general cleaning liquid.

I   have some olive oil soap bars offered in my store….a 400g bar of original savon d’marseilles from France and a 230g bars of authentic aleppo soap (hammam soap) from Syria. But I do hope some of our local artisan soapmakers in Malaysia will soon produce pure castile soap in both bars and liquid form. This is because the original castile soap is a much healthier alternative  to most commercial soaps for people with ultra-sensitive skin due to the soothing olive oil content in it . And it is also a much healthier choice for the environment as it is processed minus any synthetic additives or chemicals (except for the lye, of course).

About Our Vanilla Beans

greenvanillastore.com's vanilla beans retail packs

greenvanillastore.com's vanilla beans retail packs

Why are our vanilla beans different? Our beans are single-sourced, meaning they are planted, harvested, cured, graded and packed on-site…These beautiful  vanilla beans came direct from the farm to you without having to go through any middlemen or a collective curing house.  We try to pack our vanilla beans as minimally as possible to avoid waste.

Our vanilla beans are sourced from a Sepik private grower who is committed to sustainable farming methods and ecosensitive production practice. The lusciously plump, moist and fragrant planifolia and tahitensis cured vanilla beans we offer on GreenVanilaStore.com are PNG government-certified organically-grown and naturally sun-dried in pristine jungle-environment farms away from smoke and pollution.

Lately, we have vanilla beans suppliers from around the globe contacting us and offering real low prices for their vanilla beans. Yet, we had to declined the offers because most of the beans came from a central curing house and some are not organic at all.  We will not compromise the quality of our products for a wider profit margin and this is how we do things at GreenVanilaStore.com …

However, if there’s any Malaysian vanilla beans grower out there who’s interested to sell their vanilla beans in small consumer bulk to/through GreenVanilaStore.com, you’re very much welcomed to contact us. Send us a sample or two of your best beans. Remember, GreenVanillaStore.com will only sell single-source, organic Grade-A Gourmet vanilla beans, size from 15cm to 20cmm ++ and we carefully sorted and hand-picked our beans from every batch received from our supplier. We also take into consideration your business ethics and production methods. This is because GreenVanilaStore.com only source its products from ethically responsible labels, producers, businesses and suppliers who are passionate about the environment and sustainable development.

Top 10 Synthetic Cosmetic Ingredients To Avoid

By Aubrey Hampton of Aubrey Organics

1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Paraben – Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrogenic and can be absorbed by the body through the skin. Widely used even though they are known to be toxic.

2. Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) – Often used in cosmetics as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness of hair and skin. DEA and TEA are “amines” (ammonia compounds) and can form cancer-causing nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. Toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

3. Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea – These are widely used preservatives. The American Academy of Dermatology has found them to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis. Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals contains a good antifungal agent, and they must be combined with other preservatives. Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic.

4. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate – A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos for its cleansing and foam-building properties. Often derived from petroleum, it is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the phrase “comes/derived from coconuts.” It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.

5. Petrolatum - Also known as petroleum jelly, this mineral oil derivative is used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body’s own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

6. Propylene Glycol – Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. It has been known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema. When you see PEG (polyethylene glycol) or PPG (polypropylene glycol) on labels, beware – these are related synthetics.

7. PVP/VA Copolymer – A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, styling aids and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since inhaled particles can damage the lungs of sensitive persons.

8. Stearalkonium Chloride – A quaternary ammonium compound used in hair conditioners and creams. Developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, it is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which are beneficial to the hair. Causes allergic reactions. Toxic.

9. Synthetic Colors – Used to make cosmetics “pretty,” synthetic colors, along with synthetic hair dyes, should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic. If a cosmetic contains them, don’t use it.

10. Synthetic Fragrances – The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read “fragrance.” Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation—the list goes on. Advice: Don’t buy a cosmetic that has the word “fragrance” on the ingredients label.

How To Read Product Labels

How do we know what we are buying and putting on our skin is truly natural and organic? Lately, with increasing public awareness and concerns over the toxins in our environment, more and more big-players in the cosmetic and personal care industry are jumping on the “organic” and “natural” bandwagon.

Unscrupulous companies are very adept at misleading the consumers through playing with the word “organic” and “natural”. Many claimed that they use natural ingredients in their products but when you look at the labels you’ll see some word-play like “naturally-derived from…” and also a long-list of suspicious-sounding chemical names.

To be safe, you should be aware that it is a legal requirement that all cosmetic and skincare products must be labeled with the ingredients in the descending order of their total quantity in the product. Don’t come near any products without a full disclosure of its ingredients on the labels. You can also divide the ingredient into 3 parts. The first 1/3  usually made of 90-95%  of the product, the middle 1/3 about 5-8% , while the bottom 1/3 about less than 3% of the product.

Hope this helps.

Yummy Mommy Whipped Belly Balm

my chocolate-scented yummy mommy whipped belly balm

my chocolate-scented yummy mommy whipped belly balm

I love making my own cosmetics. With a new baby on the way I just came up with an excuse to formulate an all-natural super-moisturizing whipped belly balm to keep the stretchmarks at bay. My formulation includes 70% unrefined shea butter, dark cocoa butter, extra virgin olive oil, tamanu oil, rosehip seed oil, unrefined beeswax and some essential oils. I’m using all-organic ingredients of course…

I’m experimenting it on me…so far so good…the balm smells oh-so deliciously like a bar of chocolate and sink beautifully into my skin leaving it soft and well-moisturized for a long, long time! Maybe, after a little tweak here and there to fine-tune the formulation, I’ll offer this belly balm online next year.

And-oh, here’s note of reminder: You cannot get rid of stretchmarks once they set in…but you can always prevent them from happening and minimizes their appearance by nourishing and strengthening your skin through proper conditioning and moisturization.
